Science & Medical Terms II

Anti-hallucinogen
DS9 Episode: DS9 491 - Hard Time

An unspecified drug prescribed as a thrice-daily dose of 30 mg for O'Brien to take the edge off the hallucinations and depression stemming from his virtual-world imprisonment on Argratha. Bashir ordered it for a month before realizing their emotional cause.

Antiproton radiation treatment
Episode: VOY 132 - Threshold

A treatment used by the Holographic Doctor on board the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 for Captain Janeway and Lieutenant Paris after they underwent a transwarp evolutionary syndrome brought on by traveling above Warp Factor 10. The treatment, a complete success, was used to destroy mutated DNA which would force original cells to create new, normal DNA.

aphasia
Episode: DS9 405 - Babel

Nominally a perceptual dysfunction in which aural and visual stimuli, as well as other communication and comprehension function, are incorrectly processed by the brain. Typically aphasia is associated with cranial trauma, such as a stroke or severe blow to the head, but there are no spontaneous afflictions on record. Space station Deep Space Nine was accidentally infected by an aphasia-like virus in 2369, intended as a sabotage effort against the Cardassian occupation.

Arethian flu
Episode: VOY 107 - Eye of the Needle

Illness which Lieutenant Hargrove was tested for on the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656, stardate 48579.

asinolyathin
Episode: DS9 463 - Visionary

This substance is used as a pain-killer for muscle spasm.

athelosclerosis
Episode: DS9 483 - Homefront

Chronic disease suffered by Joseph Sisko, treated with vascular regeneration therapy.

Bajoran Medical Index
Episode: DS9 405 - Babel

Database Kira consulted when tracking the current whereabouts of Dr. Surmak Ren in 2369.

Barclay's Proto-Morphosis Syndrome
Episode: TNG 271 - Genesis

A syndrome where intron release causes a de-evolution within a patient's DNA. The virus is caused by the invasion of genetic codes by synthetic T-cells, and was named for Lieutenant (j.g.) Reginald Barclay of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D in 2370 as its progenitor.

batwing aliens
Episode: DS9 448 - The Search, Part II

Nickname of an otherwise unidentified species with one or more natives often seen around the Deep Space Nine Promenade, tall and humanoid in appearance with bat-like ears flaps.

Bendii Syndrome
Episode: TNG 171 - Sarek

A rare usually fatal disease that afflicts Vulcans over the age of 200, debilitating their emotional control; there is no known treatment.
Early symptoms include sudden bursts of emotion, especially irrational anger, but the only way to prove a diagnosis is to grow a culture from tissue of the metathalamus — a process which takes several days. The telepathic abilities of Vulcans are strong enough to cause the loss of control to be projected onto others.

Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan died of it on Stardate 45245, in 2368.

benzocyatizine-24, 25, 39
Episode: DS9 450 - Equilibrium

A drug used by Trill doctors to stimulate failing isoboramine levels in joined hosts to avoid late rejection of the symbiont. It can be administered in small doses, approximately 2 ccs for a crisis situation.

bio-mimetic gel
Episode: DS9 464 - Distant Voices

A restricted substance which is hazardous if not handled correctly. Its sale is forbidden under Federation law, and even attempted purchase is considered a felony.

No it is not the "X-File" TV show, but it is based on the fact that for decades newspapers, radio, magazines, television and even motion picture producers have made a commotion    as to any discussion of their nature, their origins, their significance and, indeed, their very existence. Silent hovering, silent high-speed flight, extreme acceleration, supersonic flight at low altitude without sonic booms, and violent, very high-g maneuvers. Are these manufactured, high-tech vehicles Ours or... It has led to long-term arguments that have yet to reach any generally agreed upon conclusion. What do you think.    Want to know more?   Then go to www.freedomofinfo.org
